2008 Dive Reports

Jan 26-27 weekend: The Olympus and the Captain's Lady both went out this weekend.
Water temps in the 60's, vis on the Sub/Schurz/Naeco between 5 and 15 feet.

Feb 23: it has been rough rough rough for weeks!

March 9: Olympus is in the process of attempting a Live-aboard for the ECU Dive club: today wasn't do-able,
but tomorrow looks much better! Stay tuned!

April 1: it's been blowing for 3 weeks now... here's a test clip of a "just could make it" day last season

April 26 Papoose/Schurz 50/40 72-67 The sharks on the Papoose were "just like in the old days..." large sharks and dozens, all around. A small blacktip shark was milling about mid-water. Tons of baitfish hovering over the Schurz, and a good number of sharks there as well. A great first day of the year!
April 27 Sub/Aeolus 60/50 68 Somewhat better vis today, but the seas were a tad choppier. Another good day at sea! A nice stingray was seen on the Sub!

May 3 Box Wreck 60-70 72/67 This site has covered up somewhat since last year: that huge rudder off in the sand is mostly covered up. A touch of current was noticeable on the first dive, but disappeared for the second. Still somewhat chilly at depth! Do we need a safety line on the ladder?
May 4 Schurz 60-70 72/67 A sloppy swell made the ride a bit bumpy, but the absence of wind made up for it! Extremely good conditions underwater: a layer of baitfish above the wreck was positioned so that you could see the wreck underneath them. A gang of stingrays was hanging around the bow, and a few sharks are still guarding the goods. Who says the crew never gets green?

May 17 Indra 20-25 68 This was just one of those days that proves yet again... you really never know what the weather will do. We waited until 9am to depart and had a lovely day on the water. Diminishing winds throughout the morning shifted around lunchtime, providing a bit of that "flat calm" feeling, before slowly coming back again from the opposite direction. Lying on the bow felt just like being in a Corona commercial!

May 30 WR2 Lobster Rocks 70 77/74 Wow- those Charlotte boys sure can bring home some tail!
May 31 Spar 76   The sharks cooperated nicely while filming... great conditions!

June 2 Schurz/Spar
June 3 Box Wreck
June 4 Papoose/Sub

June 6 Naeco 80+ 78/76 Excellent conditions, a few big sandtigers hanging around off the wreck.
June 7 Naeco 80' 78/76
June 8 Cassimer/Ledge 30' 77/72 Strange, low vis on the wreck. Lots of fish, stingray and coronetfish. A few lobster on the ledge nearby.
June 9 Bedfordshire/Hardees 60+ 78/74 Great visibility- somewhat cloudy on top and it opened up nicely on the wreck.
June 10 Bedfordshire 60+ 78/74 Baitfish are all over, some might be sardines- a very cute fish!
June 11 Schurz 50' 78/74
June 12 Sailboat/Papoose 40'+ 78/74 Better vis on the Sailboat, but the Papoose does tend to stir itself up. The sharks are "officially" back!

June 14 Naeco 80 79/76 As usual, a great dive. Only a few big sharks are hanging around off the wreck.
June 15 Lobster Wreck/ Cassimer 100/30 80/77F Fantastic conditions on the Lobster Wreck- the entire site was visible as we descended the anchor line. Strange thing though, the Cassimir had much less visibility on the bottom.
June 16 Naeco 80 80/76 Just as good as the day before yesterday.

June 19 Lobster Wreck/ Normannia 80/90 80/76 A calm day made for an easy ride. A bit less visibility than a few days ago, but still a great dive. A very long-spined white sea urchin was seen on the wreck.
The Normannia had a bit better vis, and is always an interesting dive.
June 20 Far East Tanker/ CaribeSea 60/30 79/76 Lots of sharks on the wreck, but not as many as last year. The deck structure is really starting to cave in- it looks different as the ocean takes its toll.
